A Study on Medical Use According to the Characteristics of Private Health Insurance Subscribers
Lee Hyun-Boc

Abstract
The purpose of this study is to investigate empirically the medical use of private health insurance subscribers by their characteristics. This study used data from 22,094 people from Korea Medical Panel integrated data from 2011 to 2017. As a research method, analysis of variance was used along with time series regression analysis. As a result of analysis, the medical use(;outpatient visits, total outpatient medical expenses, inpatient use, inpatient days, and total inpatient expenses) of private health insurance subscribers is statistically significant effected by gender, age, income, premiums paid and health status. Women had higher outpatient visits, total outpatient medical expenses, and total inpatient expenses than men, but no statistical significance was found in inpatient use and inpatient days. It is confirmed that the older the older, the higher the use of medical care is in both outpatient and inpatient days, and the higher the premium level paid by private health insurance, the more medical use is used in both outpatient and inpatient. And the lower the income, the more outpatient visits, but there was no statistically significant difference in inpatient days. The results of this study imply that the moral hazard problem of private medical insurance subscribers¡¯ use of medical care may occur differently depending on the characteristics of private medical insurance subscribers, not simply depending on whether they are subscribed or not.
